Women and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

August 10th, 2010 by admin

Through the many years that passed, male actions stars and martial artists like Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme were given the opportunity to show their skills to the world through their larger-than-life characters on screen. Unfortunately, the same opportunity was not given to their female counterparts seeing that female action heroes were few and very far in between. Today, many women are stepping out of their comfort zones and into brazilian jiu jitsu training, but not because of an intention to hit the screens and be famous as a brave and talented heroine.

Generally, as the world seems to become more and more of a crime-ridden society, parents are supportive of their daughters taking brazilian jiu jitsu trainings and other martial arts classes. Parents and guardians feel somehow better knowing that their daughters can defend themselves against any person, particularly male attackers. As the years go by, daughters of younger ages, sometimes as young as three to five years old, are enrolled into martial arts classes to learn self-defense.

Brazilian jiu jitsu is one of the many forms of martial arts sought by women as it promotes the principle that a weaker and a smaller person can successfully defend him or herself against a larger and stronger attacker by using the proper technique and leverage.

More than Just Exercise

December 2nd, 2009 by admin

Many people make the mistake of thinking that exercising everyday is enough to make one healthy. Although most people find fitness programs like the famous p90x very effective in helping them reduce a considerable amount of weight, it doesn’t mean that the results obtained are due to mere exercising. There are a few other things that contribute to a healthier and fit body.

Achieving a fit and healthy body starts with a balanced diet. Some physical fitness programs, the p90x for example, include nutritional guides for a person to follow. Nutritional guides often consist of eating discipline routines to follow and a nutrition calendar that help one keep track of what he is eating everyday. Some fitness program packages include weighing scales that help the person monitor his body weight. Drinking plenty of water or the amount equivalent to eight glasses everyday is also essential in maintaining a healthy and fit body. Vitamins and food supplements can also help a person achieve a healthier body especially if that person is not used to eating the foods that may be the sources of the nutrients his body needs.

Some fitness programs also include books that contain inspirational quotes and testimonials from other people who have tried the program themselves before. This is to encourage the person to stay with the program and keep him motivated until he gains the desired result.

Recumbent Bikes: What’s the Difference?

May 17th, 2009 by admin

There exist several types of exercise bikes: recumbent bikes, upright bikes, and indoor cycling bikes. All of them are used for training/fitness purposes only and can be used for both home gyms and professional fitness clubs.

Recumbent bikes are just one of several types of exercise bikes. Visually it can be easily distinguished from the rest of this group. At first sight they seam a bit ridiculous and funny because the rider is placed in laid-back reclining position. But this position is considered by most riders as very ergonomic and comfortable.

Recumbent bikes (or simply recumbents) can be categorized by their wheelbase, wheel sizes, steering system, faired or unfaired, and front-wheel or rear-wheel drive.

There are so many amazing models of recumbent bikes that do not even look like bikes. They look like some extraordinary scientific inventories. For example, they can have three wheels or be made for two riders (tandem recumbents).

Recumbent bikes are not that often met in fitness clubs and home gyms as exercise bikes. Exercise bikes belong to the most popular fitness equipment today. There are several main reasons for this: price, convenience in use and storage, and high effective ness (which refers mainly to cardiovascular system strengthening, weight loss and calorie burning).
